How it differs from catering

A caterer cooks in their own kitchen and brings the food finished or nearly finished; a private chef cooks in your home from start to finish. That changes three things:

  • The menu. Everything is cooked on the spot, so dishes that would not survive transport are back on the table.
  • The group size. It works well for tables of 2 to 20; above that, a caterer with a floor team usually makes more sense.
  • The kitchen. The chef works with what you have: hobs, oven, fridge and worktop. Describe it honestly before the menu is closed.

The service normally includes the shopping, the cooking, table service and leaving the kitchen as it was. Tableware and glassware are usually yours; if more hands are needed to serve, a waiter is hired separately.

Because the chef is physically in your home, the experience is more personal. You can watch them cook, ask questions, and adjust the menu as you go. That is why it suits dinner parties and small gatherings where the cooking becomes part of the evening.

What you pay

There is no published per-person price for this service: each chef quotes the whole menu according to the produce, the number of guests and the hours they will spend in the house. What is worth knowing is that in catering the usual minimum order is €300 – €600, and with tables of two or four that floor is what decides the bill.

Ask for the quote with these lines apart: produce, the chef's fee, travel, support staff if any, and tableware if you are not providing it. Quotes are normally given without VAT; the service is taxed at 10 %.

If your group is small, the per-head cost will be higher because the chef's time and travel are split among fewer people. For larger groups, the cost per person drops, but at a certain point a catering company with a floor team becomes more efficient.

What to ask before booking

  • How many hours they will be in the house, from arrival to clearing up.
  • Whether they do the shopping and what happens if you want to change an ingredient.
  • What they need from your kitchen: free hobs, an oven, fridge space, hot water.
  • Whether the price covers table service or only the cooking.
  • How allergies and intolerances are handled, and whether there is an alternative menu.
  • Whether they leave the kitchen clean and who takes the rubbish out.

Two to four weeks is usually enough; for Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and summer weekends, far earlier.

Ask for a written confirmation of the menu, the number of hours and the final price. A chef who works in private homes will be happy to provide it.

Formats and occasions

A private chef at home is a flexible format. It works for:

  • Dinner parties for 4 to 12 people, where you want a restaurant-quality meal without leaving home.
  • Family celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries or a special lunch.
  • Holiday rentals – if you are renting a villa or a chalet for a week, a chef can cook for you several times, and you can agree a menu for each day.
  • Small corporate events in a private home or a rented apartment, for a board meeting or a team dinner.

The chef adapts to your kitchen and your schedule. You decide whether they cook in front of you or in a separate kitchen, and whether they serve at the table or just leave the dishes ready.

How to request a quote without surprises

When you contact a chef from the directory, be specific about the date, the number of guests, the type of menu you want, and any dietary restrictions. If you have a budget in mind, say it – it helps the chef propose a realistic menu.

Ask for a written quote that lists the produce, the chef's fee, travel costs, and any extra services like a waiter or hired tableware. Confirm what is included in the price and what is not.

If you are booking for a special date like New Year's Eve, book early – good chefs are taken months in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What does a private chef service include?

Normally the shopping, cooking in your kitchen, table service and leaving the kitchen clean. Tableware and glassware are usually the ones you already have. Any extra — a waiter, hired crockery, drinks — is charged separately, so ask for an itemised quote.

How many guests does it make sense for?

It works well from 2 to 20 guests. Below four, the price per head rises because travel and the chef's hours are shared among few people; above twenty, a caterer with floor staff usually works out better.

What if my kitchen is small?

The menu is adapted. A chef used to private homes can work with two hobs and an oven, but needs to know beforehand so as not to propose dishes that need more space or more refrigeration than you have. Send a photo of the kitchen with your request.

How is a private chef different from a normal catering service?

A caterer cooks in their own kitchen and brings the food ready; a private chef cooks in your kitchen, from scratch, and serves it fresh. That means more flexibility with the menu, a more personal experience, and it works better for small groups.

Do I need to buy the ingredients or does the chef bring them?

Most private chefs include the shopping in their service. They arrive with the ingredients already bought, so you do not need to do anything. But always confirm it in the quote – some chefs may prefer you to buy certain items, especially if you want a specific brand or product.
